The specialist said her baby had suffered a stroke, would likely never walk, would probably be developmentally delayed and she should just “learn to live with it”.  Helene Louise was devastated but simply could not reconcile the limitations placed on her smiling baby with the intelligence she saw in those bright eyes. 

Drawing inspiration from her childhood heroes and applying seemingly unrelated life experiences like working as a flight attendant and learning to play the piano, Helene helped her daughter become a vibrant young girl with a future as bright as anyone else's. And, within the struggles, ultimately found a sense of healing and resolution, realizing that even the most difficult situations can eventually bring something positive. The Little Dark Spot: How I Came to Terms with My Baby’s Stroke, tells that story.

Le spécialiste a dit que son bébé avait subi un AVC, qu’elle ne marcherait probablement jamais, qu’elle aurait un retard de développement et qu'il n'y avait rien à faire. Helene Louise était dépassée mais elle ne pouvait simplement pas concilier les limites imposées à sa fille avec l'intelligence qu’elle voyait pétiller dans ses yeux.

En s’inspirant de ses héros d’enfance et en appliquant des expériences de vie apparemment sans lien, par exemple travailler comme agente de bord et apprendre à jouer du piano, Helene a aidé sa fille à devenir une jeune fille pleine de vie avec un avenir aussi brillant que celui de n’importe qui. Et, malgré les difficultés, elle a trouvé un sentiment de réconciliation et de résolution, en réalisant que même les situations les plus difficiles peuvent finir par apporter quelque chose de positif.
